Orphaned elephants at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Thanks to Kaye McKenzie for this link to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, to which you can contribute by adopting or fostering an orphaned elephant or rhino.

Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick (“the first person in the entire world to successfully hand rear newborn fully milk dependent African Elephant orphans”) explains the organization’s philosophy: “Saving wildlife and wilderness is the responsibility of all thinking people. Greed and personal gain must not be permitted to decimate, despoil and destroy the earth’s irreplaceable treasure for its existence is essential to the human spirit and the well-being of the earth as a whole. All life has just one home — the earth — and we as the dominant species must take care of it.”

Postcard from Pipelineistan
By Pepe Escobar

What happens on the immense battlefield for the control of Eurasia will provide the ultimate plot line in the tumultuous rush towards a new, polycentric world order, also known as the New Great Game.

Our good ol’ friend the nonsensical “Global War on Terror,” which the Pentagon has slyly rebranded “the Long War,” sports a far more important, if half-hidden, twin—a global energy war. I like to think of it as the Liquid War, because its bloodstream is the pipelines that crisscross the potential imperial battlefields of the planet. Put another way, if its crucial embattled frontier these days is the Caspian Basin, the whole of Eurasia is its chessboard. Think of it, geographically, as Pipelineistan.

You can submit writing about anything — not necessarily travel-related — for this contest. The prize is a ticket to anywhere in the world you want to go (max $2,000). Check out the excellent writing that has won prizes in previous years, and get your application in by April 30, 2009. Thanks to Eva Schlesinger for the link.

From Equivocality.net:

Welcome back to the Writer’s Travel Scholarship, now in its fifth fabulous year! This is is a short-form writing contest where the winner gets a round-trip ticket to anywhere in the world. Really.

Naturally, I do see a lot of travel writing submissions, but I’d like to reiterate that this is not about travel writing: it’s about writers traveling. Anything is fair game, as long as it’s prose under 10,000 words. Fiction, non-fiction, memoir, porn, whatever… just make it a good read.

“Why do you do this?” is a frequently-asked-question. So I will repeat (say it with me this time):

I think travel is good. I think writing is good. I think it is important that writers travel.

Applications are open from now until midnight April 30th, 2009. The winner will be announced May 15th.

Thanks to Connie Hale for forwarding this information: Join us today on the Web site for the 2009 Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism, where we are posting information about the March 20-22 event. More than 50 star speakers and 800 mid-career journalists will gather in Boston to celebrate the art of storytelling in every format and every medium.

This year’s theme — Telling True Stories in Turbulent Times — refers both to the stories we write and the changes in our industry. The three-day weekend provides a rich array of sessions to build skills, interact with experts, expand horizons, and learn innovative approaches to writing at a time when many newsrooms struggle to nurture the narrative journalist.
