“Ever check into a hotel after an eight hour flight from NY to London, and the picture of the room and hotel you saw on the hotel website does not resemble in the least what the room looks like in person?

“A website called TVtrip.com prevents these disasters and shockers. They have videotaped most of the better hotels in Europe, New York and Chicago (adding new cities on a regular basis), so you can see your next hotel in real time before you book it (with one click — to Expedia.com or Booking.com).”

Congratulations to Linda Jue, who was given a much-deserved award at the annual banquet for the NorCal chapter of Society of Professional Journalists for her outstanding service to the profession. And thanks to Joanna Biggar for letting us know about it.

The Society of Professional Journalists (Improving and protecting journalism since 1909) is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry through the daily work of its nearly 10,000 members; works to inspire and educate current and future journalists through professional development; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press through its advocacy efforts.”

Classes will cover every genre from fiction to non, muck-raking to memoir. Visit the Classes page of the Grotto website at http://www.sfgrotto.org for more information and to register. “It’s a novel way to chart the evolution of what for many young Australians has been a rite of passage for decades. Travel writer Brian Thacker is retracing the 1974 journey through South-East Asia of Lonely Planet founders Maureen and Tony Wheeler using their original guidebook — based on information they collected during their adventure a third of a century ago — as his only reference.”

Rowing for Children: For those of you who have been keeping track of Erden Eruç’s progress as he rowed—singlehanded—from the waters off California to those off Papua New Guinea, you can hear a first-person account of the adventure at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon on November 6. Click on the link to learn more, or to RSVP.

From Erdun: “There will be dinner beginning at 6 p.m. and I will begin my presentation at 7 p.m. about my row across the Pacific Ocean from California shores to the Papua New Guinea waters…  This singlehanded crossing by oars was especially meaningful for me since we raised about $47,000 for charity during that crossing to benefit the rural primary school children in regional boarding schools in Turkey.
