Sunset magazine

Jeff Phillips, Senior Travel Editor at Sunset magazine, spoke to Left Coast Writers this month, and provided a list of Ten Steps for Proposing a Sunset Story. As Jeff pointed out, most of the tips also apply to writing for other magazines. Some of the more specific info: Sunset pays $250 for front-of-the-book shorts. “Be the Go To person. Sunset editors aren’t interested in your trip to Katmandu, but we do want to know what’s new/interesting where you live. Start by thinking small and regional — develop a specialized knowledge of your own region.” First time submission? Mailed in your proposal with a couple of clips and a short, lively cover letter. Sunset’s target audience is women ages 30 – 45. Freelance writers guidelines are at www.sunset.com.
