“Soul Of America publishes information that addresses cultural travel, primarily in America and the Caribbean. We orient information to Black online travelers, an underserved market before we arrived. Drawing inspiration from our African American ancestors who invented Soul Music, we like to say ‘Soulful Travel Begins Here.’
Our website, Soul Of America, welcomes ALL visitors who wish to broaden their cultural travel options by exploring editorial and photographic treasures overlooked by mass media.”
Thanks to Eva Schlesinger for sending this info.

Toronto Globe & Mail
December 18, 2004 | Comments Off
The Toronto Globe & Mail publishes personal essays in their Facts & Arguments section and also has a Travel section. Here are their travel writers’ guidelines.
“Facts & Arguments submissions should be between 800 and 900 words and should be personal, not political in nature. Please send them by e-mail to facts@globeandmail.ca or by mail to 444 Front St. W., Toronto, M5V 2S9. We review all essays we receive but unfortunately cannot provide feedback because the volume is too great. If we plan to use your piece we will notify you within two weeks of receiving it.”

I received this ad for Bookman Marketing via e-mail. They offer to market your book, even if they didn’t publish it. Here’s their FAQ page. Do any of you have experience with them?

“We will sell your book, even if you published with another company!
Bookman Marketing is the only company in the publishing industry contacting bookstore owners and selling books. Whether you published your book print on demand or with a subsidy publisher, we will sell it for you. (And no, you don’t have to reprint or republish with us.)

More magazine

Below are the “writers’ guidelines” I received when I queried More magazine. While the guidelines are surprisingly unhelpful, the magazine does publish a lot of freelance work and a lot of first person personal essays, so may be worth looking into. An editor I spoke with said they like relationship essays (”revealing personal stories”) and do not print “how-to” articles.

Washington Post’s Style Invitational
December 4, 2004 | Comments Off
Thanks to April Orcutt for forwarding this:
The Washington Post’s Style Invitational once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here are this year’s winners.
Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.
Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period.
Giraffiti (n): Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.

For those of you who have asked (and those who haven’t), the reason I deleted the references to my notes from the Travel Classics West conference is because some of the attendees objected to my posting information from a conference they had paid to attend. I’m feeling a need to explain my point of view on this subject, so here goes:
