Why Travel?
October 30, 2004 | Comments Off
Big thanks to Book Passage for publishing the link to an excellent Rick Steves article, Travel can help mend a fractured world, outlining many important reasons to travel. And at this time of year, I’m especially glad for Steves’ reminder: “…cultural snapshots — the essential joy of travel — have made me both thankful to be an American and an enthusiastic citizen of the planet. Travel gives us a perspective that can translate, through the voting booth, into American policies that will not alienate us from the family of nations. And when that happens, we’ll all be truly stronger, safe and better off.”

Wikipedia

From the memes article I linked into Wikipedia, “a multilingual ‘copyleft’ encyclopedia designed to be read and edited by anyone. It is collaboratively edited and maintained by thousands of users via wiki software, and is hosted and supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. In addition to typical encyclopedia entries, Wikipedia includes information more often associated with almanacs, gazetteers, and specialist magazines; and coverage of current events.”

Dead or Alive?

At whosaliveandwhosdead.com you can learn just that. Search by category (musicians, politicians, actors, other), check out notable birthdays, or sign up for the free mailing list (roundup of notable deaths). If you’re really bored, you can learn more about WA&WD’s webmaster (an oboe-playing born-again Christian political science major computer networking consultant who also maintains a website called the Texas Executions Information Center and posts photos of his cats and the volleyball courts near his house).

At snopes.com you can check the veracity of urban legends, join a discussion group (topics include alligators in sewers, headlight flash gang initiations, HIV-loaded needles in theatre seats, business cards for a dying child, and $250 cookie recipes), check the scam report (e.g. find out more than you need to know about those Nigerian money-laundering e-mails), and even sign up for a free newsletter that promises to keep you informed about recent urban legends.

But Does it Pay?

My new colleague (well, I’m the new one. So I guess I’m his new colleague) Chris Springer is an excellent writer (I’ve had fantasies of trying to lure him into my department), and is also plugged in to the travel writing network. Here’s a link he found to Tom Brosnahan’s Travel Info Exchange, with “good info on evaluating an offer from a travel guide publisher. Elsewhere on this site is advice to consider before signing a contract.” I particularly liked the sections on Calculating Profitability and Author as Brand Name. Thanks, Chris!

Your favorite travel blogs?
October 2, 2004 | Comments Off
From travel writer Gayle Keck: “I’m doing a story on travel blogs, and would love if you could ask readers to send me their favorites. Not just stand-alone sites, but also journaling sections and msg boards affiliated with bigger sites, like the journal section on Lonely Planet. Thanks much!”
Reply to GAKeck@aol.com. And if you haven’t already read her excellent work, check out Gayle’s site.
