Camas: The Nature of the West
June 28, 2004 | Comments Off
Camas is a literary journal created ten years ago by graduate students in the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Montana. “Our goals are to encourage a dialogue on environmental and cultural issues in the West, celebrate the people who work, study, write, and live here, and to provide an opportunity for students and emerging writers to publish their work alongside established environmental authors, such as William Kittredge, Richard Nelson and Ellen Meloy. We welcome contributions and submissions of essays, poems, fiction, art and photography.”

“We all have sites we’d like to visit one day, but it’s fair to say that Patricia Schultz’s list is longer than most–just look at her new book, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die.” MSNBC’s Travel with Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel has selected their top ten for our review here.

Mosquito repellants
June 11, 2004 | Comments Off
I just received one of those “junk” emails with suggestions for mosquito repellants, and it got me thinking…travel writers, of all people, should know how to keep mosquitoes away. Do any of you recommend these or other products/techniques:
Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed about half and half with alcohol
Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets
Vanilla that is sold in Mexico (natural, pure)
Vitimin B-1 (Thiamine Hydrochloride) 100 mg./day
Vick’s Vaporub
Also, avoid eating bananas.

You may have seen these 26 definitions on the Internet. I’m passing them along in the interest of helping us all stay up to date on ever-changing technical terminology. Thanks to Chris Lunn for forwarding them; author unknown.
1. Assmosis – The process by which some people seem to absorb success and advancement by kissing up to the boss.
2. Blamestorming – Sitting around in a group discussing why a deadline was missed or a project failed and who was responsible.
3. Seagull Manager – A manager, who flies in, makes a lot of noise, craps over everything, and then leaves.

100 Rejections
June 2, 2004 | Comments Off
I love Lowrey McFerrin’s idea that new writers should strive for their first 100 rejections … and that along the way they’ll inevitably have a few pieces accepted, as well. I’ve been writing for a couple of years now, but am just beginning to send stories out, so I have a long ways to go towards my first 100R.
However, in the spirit of revelling in those rejections, I’d like to announce that I’ve just received two: the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine declined to accept my The Naughties Wedding, and Seal Press’ A Matter of Choice was unable to use my essay, A Conversation with Fritjof Capra.
